Accounts Receivable Policy and Procedure Development



Allocation of staff time and the definition of roles and responsibilities is an on-going challenge for the typical medical practice.  Whether addressing the issues of staff turnover and maintaining consistency within the practice, or the ever-changing legislative and payer guidelines – there is a need for continual staff training, review and re-training. 

A careful review of workflow accompanied by written job descriptions for all positions will aid in staff comprehension of responsibilities and create an environment that can more easily adapt to changing needs and priorities.  Recurring scenarios and/or tasks should have step by step instructions available to all appropriate staff in order to promote a consistency in how situations are handled, but also to clearly communicate the owners’/managers’ expectations for and rationale behind said tasks and defined processes.  Areas of emphasis include:
  • Consistency in the handling of given situations among staff.
  • Improved decision making among staff based on the written reference tools made available by management that promote improved understanding of the practice policies and procedures.
  • Improved ability to implement changes that are consistently adopted and executed.
  • Clearly defined roles and responsibilities promote an environment of greater consistency and accountability among staff.
