The Electronic Health Record is not a destination – it is a journey. Typically, only after months of use and incorporating the technology into workflow or adapting workflow to the technology do practices have a true understanding of the capabilities and potential of their EHR. On the flip side, certain staff may have spent the months post-implementation developing bad habits and ineffective workarounds. In either case, the opportunity to increase the efficiency and productivity of the system is most likely considerable.

After training and implementation are complete, the important process of utilization management begins. While vendor-training may have adequately prepared your practice to begin using the EHR, most vendor trainers lack real-world experience and knowledge. An understanding of how the system works is important for the initial phase. Understanding how to best utilize the system is the key for system optimization.
